The Pace of Good Work

We are now three weeks into January 2026. I started work on 2nd January (whilst it’s still quiet) to allow room for deep work.

In recent years it has become increasingly apparent to me how work easily spills into every available surface – desks, calendars, weekends, energy and attention – and how that is often counterintuitive to productivity.

This year I’m being more intentional about working with better space to think with more clarity. It isn’t about moving faster or doing more, but instead slowing down to make room for imaginative thinking outside of the frame – prioritising important work that fully aligns with my values.

At my farm office last week, my rotund sheep Pickles happened to be perfectly framed in the window, blissfully eating grass and going about her day slowly tidying up my farm, entirely unbothered. Felt like an accurate commentary on work – most things worth doing – however big or small – don’t benefit from being rushed or pressured by external factors. They ought to be done intentionally, meaningfully and thoughtfully.

Busyness tends to trump focus across most workplaces. We’ve got it the wrong way around – the work that matters most is often the first to be displaced.

My farm doesn’t just help with physical health (it’s my gym); it also has a special way of making room for clear thinking. Not always offering all the answers that I seek, but always enforcing pace and attention. I get so much done out here.

January isn’t about starting the new year but more of an opportunity to draw clearer edges and develop a more deliberate relationship with time, effort and values.

That said, I’m looking to collaborate on meaningful projects or engagements this year. Reach out if there’s something thoughtful or interesting you’re working on that I might be able to contribute to. I’m always open to conversations grounded in substance and real impact.

PS: I upgraded my farm office over the holidays (new lights, furniture, floor) and added scented candles to lift the vibe while working. The Buttery Croissant candle choice totally backfired as it makes me hungry while trying to think – I’m not convinced the other candles I got (apple pie, maple syrup pancake) are any better alternatives. 🥐
